Education
The South African government has been working on bridging educational gaps amongst South African communities, however, marginalized communities are still suffering from limited access to education. Mainly due to poor infrastructure, lack of essential resources, overcrowded classrooms, lack of basic amenities in schools, and technology gaps. This then leads to missed opportunities to equip children and youth with necessary skills needed to pursue careers of their dreams or become good leaders, thus exacerbating the cycle of poverty.
The Dr Mkhize foundation aims to bridge these gaps through fundraising for the under resourced schools and afford them decent infrastructures, access to technology and digital learning, and access to basic amenities. Addressing these gaps will not only empower individuals but will also contribute to national economic growth and social stability in the long-term.
Many children from disadvantaged communities live more than 3km away from school, resulting in high rate of absenteeism, poor performance and lack of motivation, and poses a significant safety risk to female learners. The Dr Mkhize foundation aims to mitigate these factors and increase access to schools, and reduce protection risk by donating bicycles to the communities in need. This will positively impact on their health and overall school-performance.
Poverty and unemployment
Youth unemployment in South Africa is one of the country’s most significant socio-economic challenges, with estimated unemployment rate of 60% for those aged 15-24years. This is largely attributable to economic constraints (lack of job opportunities), skills gaps, inequality and access (disadvantaged young people, particularly those from rural areas, often lack access to quality education, networks and resources), as well as labor market barriers (employers’ preference of hiring experienced workers).
The Dr Mkhize foundation aims to combat this through skills development for the youth, promoting entrepreneurships, equipping youth with market-relevant skills and expanding employment opportunities.
Rehabilitation
Substance abuse among South African youth is a significant public health and social issue, with serious implications for young people’s mental and physical health, academic performance, and future economic prospects. Factors such as poverty, unemployment, peer pressure and social stress lead to substance abuse. This then perpetuate the cycle of addiction, poverty, and unemployment, limiting opportunities for social mobility and reinforcing socio-economic challenges.
The Dr Mkhize foundation hopes to implement preventative and rehabilitative strategies though raising awareness, community out-reachs and support, mental health counselling and providing rehabilitation and reintegration programs for the affected communities. This will help strengthen families and community developments, thus paving a way for a healthier and more productive generation.
Health
South Africa faces significant health challenges, particularly among children, due to factors such as malnutrition, high rates of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and inadequate access to healthcare services in rural areas. These issues are compounded by poverty and poor sanitation, which contribute to preventable diseases like diarrhea and respiratory infections.
The Dr. Mkhize Foundation is planning to mitigate these challenges through targeted interventions, including nutrition programs, mobile health clinics, and health education campaigns. By collaborating with local communities, the foundation aims to improve access to healthcare, promote early disease detection, and provide support for vulnerable children, ensuring healthier outcomes for future generations.
